I hate to sound old but that just goes to show what a boon the old designs really benefitted from being forded to work within the gameboy's screen size. They had to make the designs as efficient and cohesive as possible because they couldn't add details everywhere. The original sprites were mostly created from rough sketches so the design was first largely worked out on the sprite, then adapted for the artwork--the sprite is the original look

I hate how much distaste people have for Red/Green and Blue/International RB's sprites are. Sure the RG set is a bit wonky but I always thought the Blue ones were fine and I hated when they made the Yellow sprites look as homogenized and clean as the cartoon. These guys were weird monsters with their own distinct charm, not just the cutesy monsters from the anime. Back in the first year or so Pokemon wasn't just a kiddie thing, you still had teenagers and older players interested in the game. That went away except for more diehard fans after G/S, i think thats largely due to the look for the main games getting more and more childish looking with bright colors and clean art.
