Wasn't the first one just a clone of Lotus Turbo Challenge? Anyway, all of them games play great up to this date, but I think Lamborghini American Challenge would be the best one due to the soundtrack and the betting system, even if it's a bit slower. Game Boy port was suprisingly capable as well.

Anyway, earliest racing game I could still recommend is Stunts on the PC, pic related, released in 1990. Comes with a really robust track editor in-game, so you can create some sick tracks filled with loops, jumps etc. Basically Trackmania before Trackmania was even a thing. Graphics are ancient, but charming in a weird way.

How does licensing of retro games work? Can I recreate old game for iOS and put it on AppStore for $?
How can I find out which games are licensed, which are not, whether it is legal and AppStore will approve it, etc. etc.

This far in and no mention of Stunts? I am disappoint.
