Good post. I think Ecco also should be considered at that level. It is about a beautiful soft creature, in an environment which is largely a constrictive violent nightmare environment long before you go back for the visible manifestation of it.
Metroid gets off easy since it is alien throughout, whereas Ecco works harder to demonstrate a mental transition into darkness.
Ecco's old view of the world was full of color and companions and there was always easy access to air so the nature of your existence wasn't a concern. This content is dashed in an instant, and you leave to do something about it even though you don't know what that is. You slowly come to realize that you are bound to a place full of hostile things lurking in solemn dim complexes, just as you are bound with a constant reliance on the air which will always be separate from that environment. You can't fight most of these things directly, only maneuver through the labyrinths they live in which exist as part of the ocean you call home. Sometimes you see the colors on the surface again, but it will only be a brief reminder before it spits you back where you belong. Everywhere you go, even far back in time, the situation is the same.
You only gain your temporary independence from air when you finally return to the moment you lost everything, and that is when the true horror that you had avoided finally becomes visible and not just conceptual. From that moment you see the truth of what had been awaiting you. You had to have sought out the power of something unrecognizable to have the strength to contend with it, but a monstrous mechanical meatgrinder like this could only be navigated by someone who had already been living in it. Now you will truly see if you are capable of facing it.
At the center of all the sonic blades and aliens and gore, there is still the soft beautiful dolphin.

I am very likely the biggest fan of these games that regularly comes to this board and much as I love the bulk of the game, the machine is stupid and vortex queen is bullshit. If there's any consolation, after a few runs the machine is no challenge, it's just a dull waste of time. I would feel no need to actually beat it for the sense of completion though, you've seen the real game.

You have to do the dolphin rescue quests, I forget which does which but both are super handy. One gives you blast sonar for killing for a distance, the other let's you permakill enemies if you double tap when charging. You'll know it works because there's a sound effect and little animation of a swirl of energy going into him.

Considering I have taught people here in depth how to do the jump, I'd say the opposite is true.
