Hoo boy. I wish I had time to tell you kiddos a more detailed history of the "Tails is a girl" conspiracy theory/mass delusion, but a truncated version of it is that:

1. The idea goes back to the early days of the Sonic fandom, which even back then was balls deep in bed with the furry fandom. I don't remember any specific examples of people sexualizing Tails back then, but I don't doubt that it happened in a male (Sonic) on female (Tails) context.

2. "Sonique", who now goes by Quexinos on the Sonic Retro forums, is a Sonic scene oldbie who particularly pushed this idea hard and long. And to tell you how long she pushed it... in 2000, she founded a website called Fans United for SatAM, which was dedicated to the Saturday morning cartoon (the good one), particularly to getting a third season of the show or a DVD release (the latter of which they eventually accomplished). This site was widely considered to be almost an official source of information on the Sonic cartoon. They created petitions, they did interviews with staff members of the show, etc., just about everything you'd think a good, sensible, active fan community could do to raise awareness of a cancelled show.

I visited FUS around 2006, after having been away from the Sonic fan community for a few years. In the website's 'Character Bios' section, I shit you not, in 2006, years and years removed from the early, creepy, dark (some people think the fandom has gotten worse, but it was always gay and autistic) when people would just spew their faggy headcanon all over the internet and try to pass it off as "official information", in 2000-fucking-6 the "Tails" bio on her site explicitly described him as a girl. I e-mailed her and asked what year she though it was and if she wasn't embarrassed to be writing such gay retarded lies and calling it canon, and response was basically "tough luck sweatie, it's my website heehe ;)".
