Yoshi's Story is all prerendered 2D backgrounds and tilesets.

I always liked it too. I don't think it really has many haters, just most people ended up scratching their heads when they expected Yoshi's Island 2 and got a very different game.
I believe this would have more appreciation if it was an original IP and not related to Yoshi, thus eliminating the expectation angle. It would be considered a pretty sweet and unique 2.5D platformer of the 5th gen era.

It's a great game to play high as fuck though.
