I remember reading about a trick in gaming magazines here in the US that is horrific but works. It goes something like this: start up Altered Beast in your Genesis, right when it gets to the title screen, rip that fucker right out of the cartridge slot, insert Revenge of Shinobi, hit reset, and the game is now "The Super Shinobi". I think it was Gamepro or EGM, since tips/tricks/codes was what supposedly sold gaming magazines so they tend to have an emphasis on it in US publications.

It is the severe weakness of the hardware which was its 64 onscreen of a choice of 512 colors. It was the primary reason I thought the Genesis was weaker than the TurboGrafx, NeoGeo, and SNES. It took a long while before developers were able to even choose more vibrant colors on the system to me.

I vaguely remember if you start up Altered Beast and wait to the title screen, yank that bitch out of the system still powered on, then insert The Revenge of Shinobi, and hit reset, the game is now called "The Super Shinobi" instead.

Altered Beast is really hated these days. Practically anything Sega is hated. Even back then no one in Japan nor North America liked thier games, but now they are even despised for I don't know why and can only assume tastes have changed. I still enjoy Sega games but I think these days the kids really enjoy games involving surviving in harsh conditions by building which doesn't seem like my thing, but I will say that Tracer is really cute and tempting me to try it out if I can ever save up enough for an Xbox One X. One day I'll try it out and it might be the bee's knees.

Getting that sheet of paper from underneath the scanned art tab, taking it to the counter to purchase, then going up to the cage in the back with that sheet to get a brand new sealed game from Toys 'R Us. There wasn't much available at the time, but I didn't want to leave empty handed, plus EGM gave it a 8/9/9/9 with Gamepro having exploding faces for all categories, I hoped it would be good. It turned out aside from the Macross-like cutscenes and sweet Yamaha sounding music, I didn't enjoy it as much as I did Gradius on the NES. Could never find a good speed that I was comfortable with, as it moved too slow or too fast. It was very challenging without using the T-Braster. Still a great achievement to beat it. I enjoy it a lot more now than I did back then.

I like it, however the thread does appear to hate the game. I don't think anything Sega is liked in /vr/ which is representative of how it was in my area of the United States.

Altered Beast was a pack-in game with the Genesis, and part of its launch promotion was to get a 2nd controller plus a Sega game of your choice for free via mail. I chose Golden Axe and Sega ran out of that and sent me my second choice, Revenge of Shinobi. Glad I convinced my uncle to get the Genesis for my cousins, because it allowed us to constantly swap and play more games had we all gotten the same systems. Altered Beast at least gave us a co-op title on the Genesis for a good 10 minutes of play at the time, until Streets of Rage came out.

As a reference point, I had the NES, and the pack-in games for that was Gyromite and Duck Hunt. The arcades at that time I spent playing Yie-Ar Kung-Fu, Double Dragon, Donkey Kong, Galaga, Afterburner, Mr.Do, Pac-Man, Road Blasters, Bad Dudes, Karnov, various Nintendo arcade machines, and various pinball tables so I think Altered Beast was a kind of experience that just worked for me in that time period. It is quite possible my fondness to Altered Beast is tied into my own personal memories and nostalgia but I don't expect others to like what I like. All the Saturn and Dreamcast hate /vr/ exhibits doesn't affect me, and I get it that Sea games like Altered Beast may not be "objectively" good, but I can't say Altered Beast wasn't fun for me.

I have not played the PC-Engine nor NES version of Altered Beast. I wouldn't go out of my way looking for them, but if I saw the PC-Engine version of the game for around $5, I wouldn't hesitate to pick it up.

Almost anything on a Sega console. Even though I was a Nintendo home, I convinced my cousins to get other systems and we could always swap systems just to play more. However, whenever there's a Sega Saturn thread here on /vr/, without fail there's at least 3-4 posts immediately claiming it was a pointless system without any worthwhile exclusives compared to its competitors. Same goes for Genesis games pictured here: mention Castle of Illusion and get slapped down by superior Capcom Disney games, bring up the 8meg Strider port everyone will praise Run Saber, Altered Beast just gets thrown in the trash as a short arcade port, etc. I still love the games despite many /vr/ posters constant hate; I do love the games those haters mention too, but I do not see why everything devolves to some system debate.

Fuck yeah! Bought this game purely based on the band alone, game is quite enjoyable too!

This game is so expensive. I want it, but I have to settle for emulation. Very fun stuff.

>>4017146
I had to settle for the Saturn's Tempest 2000 because I do not have a Jaguar, and I want to see and hear the differences X3 brings (didn't get it back then because I had to stretch my limited funds).

I legitimately do not know what game this is!

/vr/ loves it, I do too ... hard to ignore Climax games

I think the Castlevania themed one made it to US smartphones, but the pixel art is a mess (inconsistent).

It's this game and XBLIG's Vorpal are my favorite Mexican developed games.

Another anon pointed me out to aliexpress. Which sounds China-quality as fuck, and I'd recommend the 2 months wait in case I get scammed by some Chinaman. Also I do understand these Chinese repros are fake and I know not to let them go into circulation to pollute the pool of actual Genesis games. That's why they are solely for that abomination clone console.

I learn something every time. The setting of the game was that the earth was destroyed by pollution (common '90s animation story theme) and if you do succeed in destroying the enemy, humans will be given a 2nd opportunity to have a cleaned up earth. "Rescue" would have made sense to me as a kid too (but I did think it was short for resurrection or restore). Gaialess sounds great to me as well for a title. I guess that "Guy Are Us" pronunciation was worth not having the game called "Gay Arse" but "Gaialess" does make it a through provoking title (going well with big naked anime girl cover).

The game has both English and Japanese on the cart, if I pop it into my US Genesis it is English, and Japanese if I pop it into a Mega Drive. There are quite a few Engish moments which I don't think I caught as a kid, but pretty cool the devs tried.

As you can see, those were the first 5 games I got, and Gaiares stuck out like a sore thumb with its ugly boxart.
