Bloodlines is definitely a follow up of 4 with its use of environmental gimmicks and directional whips; but it made better use of those than 4.

Konami peaked on NES. In fact Konami owned the NES like nobody else did and they never owned another platform like that ever afterwards.

>go back & forth up and down the steps to grind for candles and get upgrades

You get the first whip upgrade at 5 candle and the 2Nd at 30
