It's pretty specific, if you don't like it after the first few levels you probably never will.

One of the most important things in Ecco is doing the dolphin saving quests in the first few levels. One gives you a long range sonar attack and the other gives you a more powerful charge which you can use to perma-kill enemies and that becomes very important in later levels.

>It's always these grandiose proclamations from SNES fans.

I'm not a SNES fan though, as I pointed out. Sega Genesis is probably my favorite console of all time. SNES wouldn't even be in my top 5, but to say you literally dislike every single SNES game out there... I just shake my head.

Ss probably the board's biggest Ecco fan, the Machine is the one part of the game that legit sucks and part of the reason Tides of Time is nowhere near as good. Other than that the game is brilliant but definitely not for everyone.

The last level is a very lame end to a great game because it's just a memorization test.

The respawning enemies are only a problem for people who don't understand the game. One of the first quests in the game gives you the ability to permakill enemies.

Outside of The Machine I consider Ecco almost a perfect game. But part of that is the understanding that a truly great game will never appeal to everyone.

I agree with this a lot. Ecco is one of if not my favorite 16 bit game and a solid part of that is the music. Though I like the CD version's soundtrack also, I don't think it fits the game nearly as well. The original feels like it was made to go along with the game, Spencer's music sounds like what someone would make if they were told it was a game about playing a dolphin but didn't know much besides that.

>>6219564
I still like the Genesis better for the last level, but really we all know there's only one piece of music that truly fits, they just couldn't use it.

It's one of my favorite games of old. Unique but wonderful controls and and good dose of challenge. I understand why a lot of people don't care for it though.

Personally I think authenticity is overrated, especially if you already played the game on hardware. Ecco is one of my favorite games ever for example, I've bought almost every release it's had, it's upgraded version was one of the reasons I got a Sega CD in the first place. But up until a couple years back when the glorious 3DS version came out, almost any time I played it was on PSP due to convenience and how nice it looks on the screen (it's still how I prefer to play Tides of Time) I even still had my Nomad and the carts, but the Nomad in reality kinda sucks.

Also I know some people like them, but I despise CRTs and if you're using hardware that's mostly what you're stuck with. I'd never tell you how you should best enjoy your games, and there's something funny to me about you trying to be authoritarian over how I enjoy mine. These days old hardware has zero interest for me.

Good design. It isn't across the board, there are still plenty of shitty 2D games the way there are shitty 3D games. But when designed and executed well, they are wonderful.

From the polls over the years it's usually been the case from what I can tell. And we can still reminisce about games, I'm in my 40's and do it here most every day. I also almost entirely emulate now though as well.

I'm an old fart who grew up playing these games and I still like them? We don't have to like the same kinds of music lol.

A few games had music I dug, but most just isn't my bag.

At the time, given everything that had come before it, the opera scene really stood out as something special. But like I say, the context is very important.

They are right, aside from a couple of specific bits it's not super hard. It just plays unlike anything else and is a game about patience under pressure which is unusual.

I like the Genesis version for it's music and the CD version for it's added levels. My favorite by quite a wide margin though is the 3D port by M2 on the 3DS which makes the game shine in a whole new light.

>we only got a few 3D remakes like Kid Icarus, Kirby, but where's SMB3? that game would look gorgeous on 3D.

Nintendo thought it would be fairly simple to make the games look good in 3D but quickly realized how hard it was to make it look good and that's why they stopped. It is a shame though, the few they released were great. Kirby 3D is really charming.

M2 perfected it though, all theirs looked incredible. This is actually one of my favorite uses of the 3D effect on the system. It brings old games to life in a whole new way. It's the only way I play Ecco now.
