Beastmen in Japanese media can look like actual beasts, monsters, or some unique race of evolved animals. >>3952412 lists some good examples. The kobolds in Suikoden are also a fave of mine.
When it comes to females though, cuteness tends to take more priority so I guess they can't really tread farther than the most basic indications of something that isn't human before it messes with the cute aspects.
I'm probably just speaking out of my ass though, but it's an explanation for something we've all noticed.
