platformers made by big companies: normal difficulty with few checkpoints
platformers made by "indies": hard as fuck but with checkpoints everywhere

When did this start and why does it happen?

Played the hell out of this as a kid. It's very comfy to me now. When I die it's just like "LOL, I fucked up!" and I've gitten gid so nothing's too difficult anymore. (except beating Impossible)
