If you modded the AI Unicorn shell to allow the directional-disc-on-a-stick-on-a-disc to move diagonally, such as cutting a round hole, it would leave the entire structure loose. The + shaped hole is what holds the d-pad in place. Same exact fucking concept behind the Xbox 360 controller's infamously awful d-pad, but they do use a circle to allow for diagonals, but have two layers of padding to hold it in place which makes it so fucking stiff and unusable.
