Not really. While FF7 is a year away in the US, in Japan it came out in JANUARY of 1997... so other magazines were talking about it for way longer. Notably, GameFan magazine had a huge 8 spread talking about it in their May 1996 issue with lots of in develop screenshots, character art, models, and early assets. It's not hard to figure the artist looked at other magazines, or even found a picture scanned in on that new-fangled internet thing.
