Unfortunately, while RS1 is definitely important and a very interesting game in its own right when you consider the time it came in, the other JRPG offerings of the time etc., it's still very flawed.

Mind you, it was a very ambitious game for its time and I can't say it did everything wrong, the world is pretty big and the interconnection between zones and dungeons is impressive, you can see that they put quite a lot of effort into creating a world as rich and complex as the Ultima games of the times but on a console, which is again, ambitious and worthy of respect, especially considering the big jump they made from the GB games to the SNES, you have a massive cast of recruitable characters, many different quests, monsters, magic spells and so on.
Historically speaking and also from a design perspective it's undeniably a very interesting game, with many good ideas and some interesting ideas that unfortunately were better on paper than in the game itself, the problem is, it's not as fun to play nowadays, unlike most other entries in the series it definitely feels dated, some design decisions like techs being weapon locked weren't too good and in fact were completely scrapped (Until the SaGa 3 DS remake went back to that idea and made it work at least), and unless you're considering the Wonderswan remaster it lacks basic QoL functions like a dash, which again, makes the game very slow, not to mention the bugs.
Moreover, due to technical constraints they had to cut a few quests related to the Destiny Stones, which are supposed to be a big deal in the story, those quests, alongside some new content were integrated in the PS2 remake, which makes the game's story and lore feel more complete than the SNES original.

So yes, it's definitely a good idea to leave it be until you can deal with all the jank and just plain mistakes so you can look at it coming from the games that built upon its legacy and appreciate it for what it did right.
