A devkit is just a console unit that is set up in such a way to allow unsigned code to run on it. It's not some magical shit. Either way, what they did back then was transfer the ROM (yes, the same ROM you play with today) from their computer to the console, using serial cables connected directly to a special, re-writable cartridge. Not all of them did this, but usually it involved re-writing a ROM chip with the game in it, every time you needed to test something. I heard either the NES or SNES devkit used floppies, but I'm not sure of it.

But it's true, D2 is not fun. When I revisited it last year I couldn't bear to play farther than Act 3. And, unlike modern ARPG, you can't just hold the M1 to attack; you have to constantly click all the things all the time.
