Gen V was the first time Kanji was offered (and could be toggled on/off), and if you're actually a Japanese noob, it's not going to be much of a help because many of those Kanji are squished to all hell; you'd recognize them if you already knew them, but certain characters don't give you much to go on with the radicals being hard to distinguish to eyes untrained.
