Neon only exists because Majesco/WayForward conducted a poll over which IP they wanted to reboot after the success of A Boy & His Blob on the Wii and Battletoads & Double Dragon got the most votes. Apparently they couldn't get the Battletoads license, so they just made it purely a Double Dragon parody. I don't think they ever have any real intention of making a serious Double Dragon reboot like they did with Contra 4.

Yoshihisa Kishimoto, the original Kunio-kun/Double Dragon creator, had some minor involvement in Neon's development, which basically amounted to giving the team some old concept art to use as reference (pic related) and telling them not to give the Lee brothers pompadours.

In all fairness, it's not like Double Dragon was the most consistent franchise ever (even judging purely from the Technos-produced games), but Neon is hardly how I would've rebooted the franchise.

I don't know why WayForward felt the need of turning Double Dragon into a parody of itself instead of simply making their own cheesy neo 80's themed beat-'em-up. I mean it was better than that shitty Korean "remake" of DD2 that came out at the same time, but I expected something better than Billy and Jimmy redesigned as surfer dudes who fight a Skeletor clone.

Billy and Jimmy Lee from an unmade Double Dragon sequel. I liked these designs better than what Genzoman actually came up with for Neon.
