Only to a moderate linux or competent computer user honestly. It's the kind of gift that will provide you with a lifetime of tech support if you give it to kids. There's a flipside though. I've been running one for nearly 6 months without issue and have enjoyed it immensely. Make sure you use decent controllers and a class 10 sd card. I'm using dual shock 3's (wireless), the buffalo snes retro pad, and the xbox 360 (wireless) controller on mine. I like the newer dualshock for the PS1 games, the Xbox 360 controller for the N64 games, and the buffalo controller for the older games. I've heard of people using adapters with other original controllers but I didn't want to bother as I already had these laying around and the gameplay is fantastic.
>Long story short, like any gift it depends on who you are giving it to. It's likely too involved or complex for your average or impatient kid.

I can only tell you my personal experience with the pi. Every system on it emulates outstandingly with the exception of N64. It does more than half of the n64 catalog well but some popular titles like oot or donkey kong country are complete crap.
