The best are just designs that are recognisable only to people who have actually played a game.

For the example (that almost everyone already has), the weak point symbol from Shadow of the Colossus. It just looks like a fairly cool nondescript tribal design to people who haven't played it and they won't even think its a reference to anything, but people who have played it will think its very familiar.
