Personally I focus on things I'm interested in or enjoy to some degree. Bumping this thread because it's nice seeing the N64 on the catalog, even if OP's text is pure /v/ turds.

My top 3 fav systems are FC, MD and SFC, but N64 comes 4th place for sure.
I'll dump some screenshots or whatever cool N64-related pic I may have.

I love the Saturn but if I think deeply, many of my favorite Saturn games are arcade ports, which is fine, but if I have to choose a console, exclusives are important. And it's not that Saturn doesn't have great exclusives (Zwei being one of my absolute favorites), but the other 2 also have good exclusives. I still love the Saturn's pad and aesthetic the most, though.
It boils down to N64 and PS1 for catalogue, and yeah I know, PS1 seems like the obvious choice but I'll go with the 64. To this day I keep going back to play it, in original hard, because many of its best games still play the best using a real N64 controller.
PS1 has a great library, but I'm not a big RPG guy, and when it comes to 5th gen 3D experiences, the N64 does it better. If I want 2D, there's Saturn. PS1 is like a jack of all trades, but if I had to choose, I'd rather have any of the other 2.
So, N64, because of its exclusives, the fact its emulation is not great, and that playing its games with any other controller isn't as good.
Also because my favorite 5th gen game is on N64.
I actually took my time to reply, OP. U mad?

>>Super Mario 64
Of course it was the game I got my system with at launch. What can be said that hasn't been said already? I spent so much time fucking around with it. Really good memories and deserved status as a classic game.
>>Shadows of the Empire
Oh man, this one came out during the Star Wars hype revival. When I was a little kid, I only remember watching Return of the Jedi on TV (I vividly remember the Yoda death scene), but it was with the re-release trilogy that I got into SW in 1995/1996, went to see all three to the threatre. So, SotE was released at a perfect time for me, also it nailed that classic SW feel.
I actually finished it for the first time not too long ago, back in the day I could never get past the jetpac level.
>>Mortal Kombat Trilogy
I bought this at release as well. I also had it on PS1 (bootleg, so it was cheaper). To be honest, I was beyond hyped when this was announced, and on-paper, it seemed like a dream come true for any MK fan, but the truth is, by then, my MK fanboy hype was already decreasing, and I didn't play it much, either version. I enjoyed KI Gold way more.
>>Mario Kart 64
Classic with friends, but I never got very into it until recently. I was a casual and didn't even knew about the mini-turbo. Some years ago I mastered it and beat all the ghosts in the Raceway tracks, felt good.
>>Star Fox 64
Fantastic. One of the best games of 5th gen. Still remember the day I got it. Never could get all medals yet. One of these days.
>>Doom 64
Rented it only once, I remember it being neat.
>>F-zero X
Got it way after its day, around 2007. Amazing, one of the fastest games ever. Couldn't beat all of the X-Cup on hardest mode.
>>Ocarina of Time
Same as with SM64, what can be said that wasn't already been said? I'm on my 2nd playthrough of it right now on 3DS

This is bait but I'll take it everyone.
>Nintendo's stubbornness to use cartridges
Totally true, it was stubborn. However, in retrospective, it's nice that N64 was the last big mainstream console to do carts. I miss carts (and no, these small SD cards that new systems like the Switch use aren't real carts). No loading times and more durability is a good thing for retro vidya. The storage limit is often exaggerated, most of the times, the majority of the data space on CD-ROM games are used for FMVs and CD audio, it doesn't make the machine more "powerful".
>olorful, censored, family-friendly games
Ah, yeah. I remember the times when Turok, Goldeneye, Killer Instinct Gold, Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Doom 64 and many others were censored.
>outdated (on the day of release) piece of hardware
What do you mean? The N64 was actually the most powerful consumer-level piece of hardware at the time. It wasn't until late '96 that the 3dfx voodoo card was released for PC.
>poor man's ports of decent games
When it comes to ports, it's inconsistent because sometimes the wrong developers were chosen by certain publishers. N64 has decent ports as far as I remember, some better than others, but it's not like PS or Saturn were any better (in fact, most of the times they weren't).
Generally, PC had the best verisons of multiplats, this hasn't changed. But after PC, N64 was the next best thing. It's why you've got Star Wars Racer on N64 and Dreamcast but not on PS1.
>some Nintendo franchise rehashes
I'll admit, Nintendo didn't create many new IPs around this time, and focused more on translating their existing ones to 3D. However, they funded some really cool new IPs under their license, like when they commisioned Treasure to do Sin and Punishment.
>one decent RPG
I can count at least... two. And it's not the one on your picture.
>overrated
Nice opinion!

Anti-Nintendo bias, and some people genuinely don't really know the catalog much besides the usual (mario, zelda), hence the "only 5 games" meme.
Many people around here just like to hate on it because it's a "normie" console, whatever that means.

It's both underrated and overrated.
The reality is that people who overrate it are Nintendo fanboys who don't go beyond 1st party games, thus enforcing the anti-Nintendo guys to hate on the system due to "it only has 5 games!!1"

In reality both kind of people are lazy and never bothered to explore the N64's catalogue. Sure it's not as big, but it's no 3DO or Jaguar either. N64 is the Master System of its generation. Better hardware that was not always used to its fullest, not a lot of 3rd party support (at least compared to the competition) but still has a lot of quality stuff worth playing.

I love the N64 and I usually defend it against the hordes of shitposters and 13 year olds from /v/ who spout the "n64 has no games" memes because their youtubers never told them about games other than 1st party and they can't be bothered to get informed before shitposting, but OP, you are a total faggot. You grew up only with a N64, so you also missed on good stuff.

Idorts still win.

Beetle Adventure Racing

there you go, off the top of my head, and without relying on 1st party (well, S&P is Nintendo-produced, but it was developed by Treasure)

you're a meanie.

I dunno, I like the N64 myself, not my favorite console but it has a lot of great games that are personal faves of mine.

I don't think it's actually overrated though, some games may be overrated, but the console itself has a lot of underrated games, so it can't be overrated as a whole.

>spyro, crash bandicoot

Mystical Ninja starring Goemon
Goemon's Great Adventure
Banjo Kazooie/Tooie
Mischief Makers

some of the best platformers that come to mind now, but there's many more.

>ff7

There are not many big RPGs on the system, apart from Paper Mario, you've got Ogre Battle 64 (one of the best in the series), and some others but most are japan-only (Super Robot Taisen, Shiren 2, etc).
Then there's Hybrid Heaven which is a weird game that mixes TPS, wrestling and turn-based combat, all with a level up system for each part of your body. It's worth playing if you want an unusual RPG, the battle system is solid.

>tomb raider, metal gear solid, resident evil

Hmmm, if you don't find the controls of Tomb Raider bad, then play both Castlevania titles on the N64, they've got a good mix of action and survival horror inspired by Resident Evil a bit.
Play Jet Force Gemini, a good Rare FPS. Just be sure to set the controls to "Expert".
There's a port of Resident Evil 2 that's actually pretty good and worth checking out even if you already played it on PS1.

I don't think any of those games should be too pricey except maybe for Ogre Battle. I'd also reccommend getting an Everdrive if you can, I think it can run every N64 title flawlessly, and there's some imports that you must definitely play on it, like Sin and Punishment. Of course, you can also mod your console to play japanese games, but some of these games are expensive too. So it depends whether you want to collect or to play
