It is hard to pick a single favorite. Panzer Bandit is like a cool Guardian Heroes. Gunner's Heaven feels a lot like Gunstar Heroes. I wish we had the multi-tap for Rakugaki Showtime to have 4-player fun, but we had to settle for 2 players. Give Umihara Kawase Shun a chance to grow on you, it's surprisingly great.

Huge for me, because most of the launch games for the system did not appeal to me. To this day, I prefer the games of the earlier iteration of PlayStation over the newer, and it has been a consistent decline for me. The PS2 was literally bolstered by the backwards compatibility, which made people stay away from other systems and justified their wait in hype for the PS2's release. Admittedly, backwards compatibility is a huge feature that gets me interested in systems.

To me it would be the games that would still be the best games even if they weren't Japan only. Sometimes the games were just not localized because of limited means in other countries.

On the original Playstation, I revisit Final Fantasy Tactics on an almost yearly basis. It has the story, music, graphics, characters, and gameplay mix that I enjoy. The Playstation doesn't crack my top 5 home video game consoles, but it does have a lot of games I like, I noticed there are less and less games on Sony's home consoles I like/get as the generations go on (got less on 2, even less on3, and few on 4).

Aside from the original Toshinden, which many may not like, it was Gunners Heaven and Panzer Bandit alongside the prospect of Final Fantasy 7 which convinced me I had to get a Playstation. They are both really good and I wish they had made sequels.

Mitsumete Knight is like Tokimeki Memorial but with less obnoxious characters to date or piss off. It even has a Sparkster cameo.

Unless they are a promotional demo disc or come in a large special edition packaging (and even then there may still be an obi), Practically every Japanese PS1 game I remember had one.

I enjoyed that arcade conversion on the Saturn. Back then if a game in Japan debuts on multiple platforms, Sony required the Playstation version to have exclusive features. So, look into the Playstation version of Soukyugurentai,as it has an exclusive 4th ship.

If you're looking for weird, there's always LSD and Pepsiman which are obvious. I will suggest Tokimeki Memorial, as it is a dating game with ugly characters. The game kept Konami afloat long enough to come back with MGS and CV.

I like a lot of those Japanese only games. While it came out on Saturn first, and the sequels are on Dreamcast, PS2, 360, and DS/3DS, there are some unique ones on the original Japanese Playstation (like the special releases in fan books with new maps, I only have vol.1-2, and the internet failed to tell me if there is a vol.3 and beyond), I'd highly recommend the Culdcept games. If you need it to be in English, there's the PS2 and 360 games, but I think the Japanese is easy enough that the game is playable for non-speakers. Everyone describes it as "Magic the Gathering meets Monopoly" which is pretty accurate. Similar to the Civilization games, I can lose hours without even knowing it. Highly strategic and fun, and a damn shame no one but my friends and I like it, so it may be an acquired taste, but since the game is only like free minus shipping because no one likes/plays it, I think it is worth finding out if you are a rare type that would like the game.

Ah, I had no clue that PS2 component cables would work, cannot verify myself but interesting to know. I just use a JP21 cable for the system. These days I sort of regret going JP21, but official PS, SS, SFC, etc. RGB cables I knew of were JP21 then. My RGB needs are already met, still good to know in a pinch, maybe I should get another set of PS2 component cables in case.

There are bad games in there too, like Thousand Arms. I only got that because back then I enjoyed stat management/date sims like Tokimeki Memorial, Mitsumete Knight, Princess Maker, Sakura Taisen, etc. I thought I had to support one getting localized. I remember the website with fan questions to the characters, some cringey stuff. I wish I hadn't lent out my US Valkyrie Profile, as my friend has disappeared from me with the game, and now the game has gotten to unaffordable prices.

No, it's just the racing game. I really love its drifting mechanics. That's what's great about most PS games, they are still cheap and work on most Playstation devices.

While I can find games I like on almost all systems. During that time the Saturn was my primary system, Playstation being the first I owned, and N64 my most recent of the period. I wouldn't call the N64 worst of the 5th gen by a large margin. Don't forget, the PCFX, Jaguar, 3D0, FM Towns Marty, AmigaCD32, and Pippin were around. I have the most trouble thinking of a game I'd like to have/play for the Apple Pippin.

Thanks, I had no clue the original Cotton got rereleased on Playstation, it was my fault for not noticing back then. I did get Cotton 100% on PSN, didn't notice the Original, and it's only ¥309 ... now I gotta get another PSN card.

Sorry, reposting an old picture, there are a few that got ports. There's so many good games on the Playstation. Strangely, I've gotten less and less for each successive Playstation system.

On PSN, they have Zanac X Zanac, Harmful Park, and Adventures of Little Ralph for cheap.
