My favorite is Langrisser IV. I like the judgement turn system and other mechanics, plus there's a lot of really fun maps (they even recycled most of my favorite older maps). Overall I just feel like the tactics involved are most interesting. Unfortunately both versions are quite easy.
Langrisser II and V are also among my favorite games. I wouldn't call any game in the series "hard" though.

Cavalry and fliers get less actions compared to mages if you move both to their fullest each turn, but don't forget that cavalry and fliers can move a lot farther and if you don't use your full movement you don't have to wait as long for your next action.

For the people who care more about story than tactics, Der Langrisser will probably be your favorite game due to better writing and interesting routes. The best version is the Dramatic Edition on the Saturn but if you can't read moonrunes your best bet is to play the SNES version.

Sorry anon, you picked the wrong thread to complain in; Langrisser III introduced some a feature in which you could choose you're waifu and this was also present in Langrisser IV and V.

By 'the original' do you mean Warsong/Langrisser 1? I've only played the original version, and while it's not a bad place to start if you really want to play everything eventually, I thought it was a lot weaker than later entries. There are some annoyances like being unable to turn battle animations off, attacks seem to have a lot more variation in the damage they inflict, and the story is extremely sparse. For example, you are given a single line saying a minor playable character got hit by an arrow and died.

I've heard that later releases improve the gameplay and story in Langrisser I so if you understand japanese don't play the mega drive version.
Likewise, I've heard the Saturn/PS1 versions of Der Langrisser make minor changes to improve the balance.

Langrisser IV is much better and IV's story isn't closely related to III's.

Even though that SOUNDS complicated and convoluted, all the requirements are pretty much stuff that you would do anyways. There's no reason not to have the love index high and there's no reason to skip the lost woods flashback. The game mentions the pendants a few times so it's obvious that they'll be a plot point, but I suppose you might not figure out that you need to have the characters holding the pendants fight eachother.

The only really unintuitive thing is that choosing NOT to ally with the demons is the route that leads to the demon characters joining you.

Anyways, I really enjoyed Langrisser IV even though the story was somewhat weak and the gameplay was horribly broken. Too bad the series is dead.
