From what I heard the demon "detection" system isn't like vanilla. It essentially borrows from Strife so you can actually sneak up on enemies a bit easier.
You can "fix" most of the issues with the compatibility settings.

I'd say get One Unit Whole Blood from GoG and then use BloodGDX (now BuildGDX.)
