If there was ever an NES game to make you better at vidya in general, the first adventure island would do it. those goddamn cave and mountain levels are fuckin brutal. and don't get me started on going through a forest full of spiders with no axe

Played a little as a kid, beat it roughly two months ago.

Graphics are kind of grating, soundtrack is consistently great, game proper is a mess. It keeps introducing new gimmicks to the levels, and before you have time to master the first gimmick, the next level introduces another one, in an endless parade of annoying ideas you don't have time to get used to.

"Minecart. Minecart with jumps. Now the minecart is a moving platform. Now the platform needs fuel to run. Now the platform starts falling. Passed it? Good, you won't ever see another platform again. The only levels i can legit say i've enjoyed are the water ones, and mostly because they're incredibly soothing.
