I never even played pokemon past gen 2, but I think you quit right before events started to be online, so you missed out on what you wanted.
I still have my legit event Mew I got back in the day, but then people discovered the Mew glitch anyway.
I could never get a Celebi though.

Going to one of the Nintendo events and getting a legit Mew transferred to your cart was probably one of the most soulful experiences in vidya, right at the end of the soul era

Gen 1 was a passion project that started way back in the early 90s.
Gen 2 was the sequel after the success.
It's hard to say what really makes /vr/ pokemon so special, probably a combination of many things.
No other pokemon felt as special as Mew, it was a literal myth and seeing a Mew IRL was mind-fucking, not to mention actually getting one.
Later games added event-only mons and stuff, nothing topped the mystique of Mew.

The Mew glitch was discovered around 2004 IIRC. If only we knew about it back in 1998/1999.
