What the fuck happened to Konami during and after the 32-bit era, /vr/?

>Castlevania genre-shifted into some crappy RPG/adventure spin-offs
>Contra got outsourced to some terrible European developers
>they gave up completely on their beat 'em up scene
>Rocket Knight was forgotten completely

Literally the only franchise that made it out unscathed was Gradius/Parodius.
