To make it sound less crazy, most of the time these people will collect the games over the course of many years. It's not someone waking up one day and deciding they want a full DS set and hopping on Ebay to drop 10 grand at once. It's more of a hunt where you go to retro shops, flea markets, and casually pick up what you can, possibly get doubles on the cheap if you can flip them, and just be on the look out. It's a "hobby" in the truest sense. The act of accumulating the set is what brings the pleasure, not the set itself. If you spread it out over many years the cost is a lot more reasonable. Then if the last game you need happens to be $1600, sure that's "a lot" but you may have saved up for it over time. I think of it the same way I think of coffee. If I add up all the cups of coffee I buy over the course of a year it's actually pretty expensive. But spread out over that year I don't especially feel it.

That said, personally I think those larger sets are just clutter. I'd be pretty annoyed with having to deal with a thousand games no matter how cheap they are. The Wii U set is actually shockingly small. I might go for it out of shits and giggles.
