Yeah, they could balance their games so combat doesn't devolve into just pressing attack 50 000 times, but nah let's just give the player the option to skip it with no consequence instead
Let's take this logic further, traveling through the game's many pointlessly huge and boring locations is also tedious (and square seems to agree with me since all future versions of the game have a fast forward option), so maybe they should've included a gambit "location:next plot point = move"
Getting treasure chests only to find 1 gil or a knot of rust is also tedious, a gambit like "treasure chest:any = get" would've been handy

I'll admit that part of the reason the game plays itself is the removal of separate battle screens and enemy formations with them, so most fights were 3 to 1 and over before they even started

You only need to grind once in my experience. Right after you get your ship if you want to buy some good stuff for the Marsh Cave. It's really not that hard.
