It's a dated product of its time that exists to get as many quarters as they could... but even today it's still the direction I like most for video games, losing over and over, but learning and getting an actually good run every once in a while as you're problem solving how to get past the part where you're struggling most... until you do a great run and beat it, where you've really mastered it too.

I don't think there's anything more satisfying to experience in this whole hobby, I'll take those 15 to 30 minute titles that take me days to actually finish due to a "Game Over" over an 8 hours one.

It's just satisfying, every run you know that you likely won't get to the end, but you get further... and when you master it, the title that gave you so much trouble, is now something you can beat in less than an hour without much issue, and this feeling of mastering and truly understanding the video game you're playing from top to bottom is the most fun I still have playing video games now

I'd say that the best home consoles for this sort of direction were NES/Famicom, Master System, and Genesis/Mega Drive, SNES/Super Famicom is when things started getting more modern to me.

It's simple, supply and demand, if people know a thing they have can be bought for a high amount of money, even if it seems to expensive, they still do it, because why wouldn't they? As long as the target market for a product buys it, because the demand's larger than the supply, the people who want to buy this stuff are at the mercy of sellers, no real way around it, the hobby's gotten too big.

I just stick to emulation nowadays, sold up all of my retro stuff years ago, still have a PS4 sitting in my living room in case I decide to play anything I find interesting which just so happens to be new.

I know the hardware itself is part of the hobby, I love it as much as anyone else, but it's too much, while ROMs, RetroArch and CRT shaders are all free, all I pay for is retro styled controllers now.

I think there's nothing WORSE in our hobby than a genuinely good video game that happens to be difficult... why? Oh, it's simple really, it's because IT'LL KICK YOUR ASS AND PUNCH YOU IN THE BALLS... and yet you can't put it down! When it's fun, truly fun, to play something, you'll want to do it even if you're losing... does that mean that you won't get frustrated? Oh, that's the tough part, you do get frustrated anyways! It's just that you keep going despite that, it's a mixture of odd feelings that feel like they contradict each other completely, but it works. We all have memories with a titles that left an impression due to this...

I thought it'd be fun to discuss what those titles are for us, also just discuss the odd relationship between difficulty and quality in video games, as it's DEEPLY related, but there doesn't seem to be a perfect formula, as it's all subjective, but also because there are many factors into what makes a video game good or bad, and what makes difficulty good or bad. I feel that, for retro stuff, the main difficulty archetypes we have is arcade, that usually lasts 30 minutes at best to finish a run, but you're SENT BACK to the title screen often, and NES hard, where you get unlimited continues, but it's JUST THAT HARD anyways.

Out of the ones I've struggled the most with, the majority were due to their arcade style of limited lives and continues, so back to the title screen it was for me... ALL OF THE TIME. It's frustrating, but you know that you might get further on this next one, and a run lasts less than 30 minutes... so why not? I got my ass KICKED by Aladdin and The Lion King, which feels ridiculous since they're Disney IPs, you know, FOR KIDS? Anyways, these are brutal at first... but then that's where this arcade style is fun, you keep getting better at it, and eventually you not only beat it, you get so FREAKING GOOD AT IT too. It feels so sweet.

I don't know, maybe it's just me being a prick, or lacking empathy... but I never got this whole "UI in RetroArch is bad/hard to use" at all... it's what kept me from using it for a while, the things I'd hear, I'd imagine myself trying to set it all up and struggling... then I installed it, went into the core downloader, got the ones I wanted, scanned my ROMs folder... and then it was all ready to play!

It genuinely shocked me, and as I used it more to change the settings to my liking, things like the UI itself, shaders, controls, etc... I did have some issues here and there, but nothing major at all...

It's just like any software, you have your settings, which you can ignore if you want, but if you want to take advantage of them, then it's good that it has everything you could need... and if you have any issues or struggle, there's a huge community where people probably had the same issue and posted about it, and people found a solution, it's just like any other major emulator, and it works.

Now I have everything in one place, a UI that fits my tastes and needs, settings I can ignore or use whenever I want, cores for all emulators I liked, it just works well. I'll never get the hate this gets...

Genesis, and it's not even close.
It's crazy how this board doesn't even attempt to hide that it's a Nintendo board at this point.
Back then everyone liked Sonic, but now Sonic was never good. Back then everyone agreed N64 and Game Cube were awful compared to PS1 and PS2, now they're classics and defined an era. Back then we all agreed SNES Aladdin was boring and generic compared to the title that actually looked like the film it was based on and had a cool sword to go with it, now apparently SNES is much better.
Nintendo fags love rewriting history.

>What are Mickey's best games?
Illusion series on SEGA, Magical Quest series on Nintendo, you can't go wrong with either here.

P.S. 8-Bit Illusion titles are quite fantastic too.

I bought an 8BitDo M30 to emulate Genesis and Saturn... it should arrive in a few days... was it a good move?

A lot of early Genesis titles had it, with Practice often being short levels or just the early levels, Easy/Normal would sometimes lock the last few levels, or would just give you a bad ending while telling you to play on Hard/Difficult/Nightmare now if you want a proper ending. I didn't despise this system, it has its charm... but I prefer a more streamlined system like we're used to today.

I'd say this is genuinely living the dream, I'm happy for you, and your wife seems nice, it's common for women to hate video games and almost compete with them for the man's time when the relationship starts, getting worse in future years... I'm glad you've found someone that's so supportive she even buys you things you'd ask for your collection and stuff, I think I found myself a keeper too, though we've been dating for a year and haven't lived together for now, hopefully she stays supportive like your woman has been when we get married in the future. Cheers, anon.

I'm the one that made that list, and well, if you prefer to exclude titles that also got a Master System release, then it does get more difficult, as the Game Gear many times felt like a portable Master System... but I don't think that's a bad thing, afterall in both the US and Japan, markets where SEGA wanted the Game Gear to sell the most against Nintendo's Game Boy, the Master System sold poorly compared to the NES... also, when the Game Boy came out, one of the main appeals was that it was almost a portable NES, you could take your NES with you anywhere and play Nintendo's IPs, so having a handheld that's almost a portable Master System, a good console I might add, with full color and backlight on the go, was just phenomenal, even though it had its shortcomings, mostly price and batteries, still a good system that was ahead of its time.

An update, I've managed to actually complete it, both its Master System and Game Gear versions, because I wanted to see if I could find any differences, they were there, but barely noticeable and relevant at all. I'm glad I've played through this, it's not as good as its original 16-Bit version, not at all, but it's still excellent in its own way, especially for the hardware. I love the art style they went with, while the 16-Bit version went with a more iconic Mickey look, this went with a more classic one, with the completely black eyes, similar to his first few appearences. Also, while it keeps the stomping mechanic, it adds the whole element of grabbing and throwing objects, and it's used so well... I'm impressed with how much fun I had playing this, the level design is superb for a 2D platformer, it looks nice, sounds nice, controls nice, it's all you can really ask for. I did struggle a lot on the final level, but as usual with retro video games... I got good at it by simply playing that very level over and over when losing, and eventually mastered it, only the final boss still gives me trouble, a lot in fact, but I can do it after a while. I loved it.
