I is easily the worst of the series, as Capcom was kind of just cashing in on how big jrpgs were becoming. II has a lot of neat ideas but execution is a little rough, look into it a bit and see if you're willing to deal with its bullshit. I like III and love IV, definitely look into those. V is unlike any other jrpg, it's interesting but not for everyone, also worth a look.
