Old fart here, even if it wasn't my primary job but I regularly worked as a screenwriter for cartoons,tv series,(one) movie and even video games (my first job was on this field when i was barely 20 as it was my main focus when i was young and naive).
And I personally think that the worst thing that happened in this medium was the focus on story.
i will always take >>2335593 then any other wall of stodgy text,dialogue or cinematic.

I am not telling that storytelling can't be done in video games.but they are... you know.. games so IMO they should focus on solid gameplay and mechanics first to achieve their idea and then build something coherent around it and not the opposite as everything else is a bonus.
Any creative work (video games for example) need imperatively to be build in flawless harmony between a technique (craft) and an idea (concept,the thought behind it)

For example (maybe not the best) the Big 2 in survival horror genre (aka RE&SH) were coherent in their respective Ideas :
RE : B movie horror,
SH : disturbing/pernicious horror.
the 2 shared the idea that real horror is to be helpless against what you are facing.
As for the technique:
Everything in their graphic and sound assets work to achieve their vision of horror.
All aspects of their gameplay were the core to achieve the 2nd idea of been helpless as tank controls and items management force the player to be cautious about his actions and surrounding.
RE story served that B movie style.
SH story served the disturbing/pernicious horror.

So if writing a story is not serving the Idea, then a 2 line text is far better then any long speech.
Also as those are the main problems good story don't have to be complex/abstruse to be good, it also don't need to explain everything,.

Also From my own experience Video games tend to attract all the losers of others disciplines with inferiority complex and sempiternal search for recognition also explain the mess we're in.
