I don't mind paying for hardware because software for old systems is basically free. People who buy old games that are easily piratable (especially games for consoles, which nowadays run zero risk of being malware) anywhere but thrift stores and pawn shops and yard sales and etc at scalper prices deserve to be ripped off.
I just realized I hold zero attachment to the discs and carts aside from the ones I had as a kid that I bought or got as gifts. Of course I buy new stuff physically when it's available, primarily because I like to lend games out to friends and no console so far has made it easy to swap digital games, as well as for future archival purposes.
Do whatever you want to do, but in the end what matters is that you are happy with your choices.
