Plutonia is the real doom 2 for me. The fact that it uses doom 1's music is a bonus.

I enjoy the hell out of this, but I'll probably never be able to beat it without saving a few times per level

Plutonia is such a deliciously controversial topic.
Some fun butthurts from DW:
> Plutonia... the very words bring back the pain, the psychological scars that the Casali brothers inflicted on me. The revenant screams and archvile cackles
> I have a love/hate relationship with Plutonia. Some levels make me go "nope!" And noclip to the exit. I don't even remember why I hate a couple levels so much, I just remember from the start screen: I Do Not Play This Level
> Played the second Level now and will stop playing it. It is just designed to annoy you. So i'll give it a ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
> Plutonia really is a "trial and error" type wad - definitely not for everyone! I've had a weird, constant love-hate relationship with the wad.. leaning more towards love. But it doesn't love me back..
> Yep, you have to commit every step into your Memory until you can run through because you know every annoying Corner. I have to be in the Mood for something like that.
> i think the liberal use of hitscanners in open areas is just tedious. i also think the geometry of the maps is not as inventive or weird as doom, doom2, or tnt.
> When it comes to Plutonia's teaching style of "get killed, then work backwards from there to figure out how not to get killed", I normally will argue that each setpiece battle is entertaining enough on its own merits to be worth revisiting and working out a strategy for. But the invisible bridge is perhaps too trolly. It's some cryptic shit to throw at a player in the middle of an action scene when under fire from across the gorge.
> You will not be prepared for how hard, brutal, and insane this wad is going to be. Even on I'm Too Young To Die/Hey, Not Too Rough, this wad is relentless. Plutonia could very well be seen as the Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels of Doom in that sense.
> Deaths: 239 (UV Playthrough - Chocolate Doom)

You don't need GzDoom for speedruns, in fact that's rarely done as speedruns are mostly done in Vanilla or Boom, because of .demo compat as well as most maps people running being those formats. It's incidentally also way harder to get away with cheating, as .demo recordings will desync if they were recorded with altered levels or gameplay.

>but that feels like cheating imo.
Probably because the gameplay isn't 100% faithful with default settings, and still barely is with proper tweaking. GzDoom is for playing Doom with advanced mods (to the point of transforming it into really crazy things), not so much Vanilla.

I'll say there's some GzDoom content which could make for some fun speedrunning though.

So adjust your cycles? Otherwise you have Chocolate Doom, which let's you play the game in original shape without having to trifle with anything, and then you have PrBoom+, which aside from replicating Vanilla gameplay with the right complevel, also lets you play maps in Boom and MBF format, also recording and playing .demo files

https://youtu.be/jLomyK5TWFU

This run is recorded with Competition Doom, and played back in PrBoom+.
Assuming the recording was done Vanilla, the .demo (which he links to and you can play back yourself to verify) should play back properly on the Vanilla complevel with no problems.
This version of the recording is played back with a music replacement pack for Plutonia, just for fun, as Plutonia just reused Doom 1 music, but this does not affect .demo syncing or playback.

Was this supposed to be fun?

Some of the level design was okay but it was just 'artificial difficulty: the iwad'. It just threw so much arch-villes and and revenants at you just to make it """hard""".

I now understand why some people call save scumming a bullshit filter.

TNT: Evilution was the better Final Doom IWAD and you all know it.

Is Plutonia the best wad ever made for Doom?

Last time I played this thing I was like 14 or 15, way back in 2000. I only ever played both episodes of Final Doom once and never returned. It seems I have forgotten how ridiculously awesome this fucking wad is. Doom II was my favourite but this blows it, and many other FPS's, out of the water.

The gameplay is just so ridiculously fucking good. The guy who made this shit really knows how to bring it out (I'm playing on UV, of course). Doom always felt sorta slow to me and I used the shotgun way too much but in Plutonia I'm using all the main weapons. Also my DEFAULT weapon whenever heading into a new area in this wad is the plasma rifle because of how unpredictable it is. At any given moment a fucktonne of monsters can be unleashed at you so to be ready for them I have the plasma equipped. That's so different to how I played Doom/Doom II which were just mostly shotgun gameplay and it hardly mattered what weapon you used for the most part.

Yeah, I really fucking love Plutonia. It's pure FPS sex. Are there any megawads better than this? I find it so unlikely based on the gameplay of how this guy uses his monsters along with the level design. It's fucking incredible!

I'm on Slayer now, not many maps to go but loving every step.

>No harder FPS campaign, aside from Perfect Dark, has ever been released, for anything, ever.

You're fucking adorable.

So yeah, someone uploaded the entirety of the Awesome Games Done Quick 2014 charity marathon, and this leaves us with the links to the Final Doom and Doom 2 segments. Needless to say, they're a must watch
