I'm not a fan of car games, but I will always have a soft spot for this, my old man always mained the Assoluto line while I used Lizard. Sadly, over the years his hands got stiff while playing and nowadays he can't play vidya. Only Bomberman on the psp on his phone from time to time.

How is R4 still unmatched?

Hey /vr/, would anyone be able to recommend me some great 5th gen arcade styled racers? I dont have much experience with the genre but I'm feeling an itch

I've never played R4 but I listen to the soundtrack on loop at work constantly. Worth looking into? I'm looking for something arcadey, not really a sim or anything

One of my favorites. Other then the racing feeling good it's so outrageously stylish. So good.

If you're into 90s aesthetic and japanese city pop/light techno shit this game will give you an orgasm. Also, the driving model is hilariously unrealistic but fun.

Do people actually think R4 is the best Ridge Racer?

Most /vr/ Ridge Racer games are very arcade in a Daytona sense where you just pick a car and track and repeat until you get bored. Luckily with Ridge Racer Type 4, they tried to push the arcade single player experience forward in the same sense where some fighting games have a polished arcade mode. Go get RRT4, start Grand Prix mode, pick your team (difficulty), your manufacturer (pick Grip for beginner), then the game will carry you through every track in the game with lite story intermissions and promotions towards new cars. Basically it's a very automated play experience that needs no menu or any bullshit. Amazing music, amazing scenery and course layouts, male announcer voice will keep you company. It doesn't take too much of your time to reach the ending, it's very much a one sitting game with a ton of replay value.

Do NOT skip the intro FMV.

Ridge Racer Type 4 is not only the best arcade racer on the PS1, but it's possibly the best arcade racing game ever made.

I feel like Side By Side and Battle Gear will never click with me. Something about the driving throws me off. And I can't get 4 working at all, so that doesn't help. BG2 does have a pretty great intro, though.
