FFVIII and X happen to be my favorite numbered sequels in the series. They're also two of the most character-centric games (as opposed to world events-centric). If you can't enjoy over-the-top japanese storytelling, with all of its silly quirks, you shouldn't even bother playing FF to begin with.

VIII has a broken combat system (in that you can abuse it like a drunk father), but the story IS pretty good, provided you can enjoy sappy love stories and that orphanage shit was pretty dumb. Also: Triple Triad.

X is the most linear up to itself, but do keep in mind that's not an instantly bad thing. The cast is one of the best in the whole series (yes, it is, stop bitching, every member has a distinct personality and motif, which you can't say for 90% of the other games), gorgeous scenery and music (applies to VIII too), and quite a lot of end-game content. Story has some unnecessary moments but knocked me the fuck out.

And to be honest, XIII isn't even a quarter as bad as the internet wanted me to believe. The game IS one long corridor for the first 20 hours, and the first 5 hours or so are terribly unexciting because the cast are all big damn cunts in the beginning, but XIII also has one of the best cases of character development (for the whole cast, really), fast and slightly tactical combat, a "this is pretty ok" story and of course, GORGEOUS grafx and soundtrack.
Sure there were a shitload of annoying things in that game (mostly due to the Squeenix staple of shoehorning talks about dreams, destiny and honor on every fucking conversation), but the game is at the VERY LEAST a 7/10.

I'm going out in the morning to look for yard sales.

Right now I'm on the lookout for a Sega Saturn, but I doubt anyone would have one. Still though I just love the thrill of finding any old games. So I'm excited.

Can't fucking wait. So glad the game hunting season is starting to pick up again. Hopefully this weekend I'm gonna find some good stuff.
