Neither Earthbound nor Mother 3 are hard though. At worst maybe some sections like the Fourside Mall might wall some people but for the most part they're pretty straightforward. I don't think Mother is particularly hard but you still have your classic stuff instakill spells, encounters one after another, and some pretty annoying dungeons like Duncan's Factory. Duncan's Factory and Mt. Itoi are harder then anything in the later games.

I've never played the game myself but 7th Saga's difficulty was ramped up to a ridiculous degree for the US release, I wouldn't really take the US version's difficulty into account as it's not as the developers intended. From what I've heard of it probably few rpgs in general are as brutal as US 7th Saga.

This is what I consider the ultimate version of Mother. This is the original nes version but with an improved script and removal of any censorship present in the original English script.

I've seen people do it but it's pointless, you can beat the game with everyone in the mid 30's.

In Valentine's Day you can talk to the BB Gang thugs repeatedly, I've seen people use them to grind to level 99.
