Rodge Rock in Retroactive is a pretty amazing one.
It features free 360° movement due to the main character having rocket shoes, a neat pseudo-3D environment and absolute insane carnage to the point where you could consider it as some sort of 2D version of Serious Sam.
On the highest difficulties it's not uncommon to have like 30+ enemies on screen and the gore is surprisingly detailed like guts splattering onto walls, slowly sliding down and then rotting away.

It there's one issue it's that the full version is essentially lost and the dev lost the source code long ago.

The full ten level version of Rodge Rock in Retro Active from 1995 is the lost game I'm interested the most.
It's pretty much a 2D Serious Sam with a cool fake-3D effect for the stage, gore effects that include such things like organs splattering on walls, slowly sliding down and then rotting away and tons of enemies and bullets on screen on the highest difficulty setting.
Also, instead of being able to jump you had jet-boots that let you fly freely through the level.

According to this site the original creator has lost the source code of the registered version:
