The Goemon games, they have their share of adventure elements and fighting enemies, but the sidescroller levels are pretty high quality platforming action.
The castles from Goemon's Great Adventure are incredible. Just pure platforming action, great challenge and pacing.

To be fair, the game's appeal was that it was hard as fuck and never gives you a break in action. The problem is that "Rythyhm Game were a Japanese family has a series of WaCkY adventures" wasn't something that was going to appeal to normie Westerners at the time. Hell, look at the ads for Tomba or Goemon around then; the only thing marketing could come up with was 'they have eon colored spiky hair and its WEIRD'.

Yeah, I know about Sony's tactics, it was just following what Sega was already doing.
Nintendo also had their own "edgy" marketing shticks during the 90s in the west, though.
But the fact remains that N64 was far more common at college dorms and teens/young adults parties than PS1.
Quickly after Mario 64 and Pilotwings came Killer Instinct Gold, Driving USA and Mortal Kombat Trilogy.
