>zooming around Seven Portals flipping switches, finding keys and important items unlocking various new areas
>suddenly hit a brick wall with no idea where to go

Thoughts about Hexen?

The engine is amazing and the graphics and design are great, but Jesus Christ the levels are a drag. It's a shame because the game has amazing potential.
