I actually prefer how Shovel Knight bends the rules. I think pixel art is just an stylistic choice and doesn't have to force you to emulate certain hardware.
Although I'm split on why it needed to look like an NES game at all. It could have used more colors and it would have been an objective improvement.


Also, I have another thought on this subject. This is Hydra Castle Labyrinth, and it does something neat. It looks retro and modern at the same time. That's because the graphics are based on 20x20 pixel tiles instead of the usual 16.
I wish more indies would do something like this, putting a twist on limitations instead of imitating them.
