I would say that this kind of 3D platformer died with the release of the PS2. Why? Because the PS2 has the Dual Shock 2 as the default controller. The Dual Shock 1 on the PS1 was never the default control scheme except for a few games like Ape Escape. It was generally optional. The five TR PS1 games all revolved around digital movement. Crystal Dynamics Tomb Raider games from the PS2 era moved to the analog control scheme.
