As an older poster I recall loving Doom and enduring the years of Doom clones afterward. The reason I loved GoldenEye so much was because it was so different, I wasn't fighting monsters, there were hardly any sprites, enemies reacted to my gunfire in ways beyond the "chaingun cha cha" and- fuck- I was Bond, James Bond on Her Majesty's Secret Service, with a License to Kill. It was different, which was important after so many years of playing increasingly uninspired Doom clones on PC.

I played Turok first, though, and despite it being quite similar to classic shooters in its key hutning even THAT was quite refreshing. I think it may have been the huge levels and visceral spriteless 3D action.

As much as you hate to hear it, though, GoldenEye has aged poorly. Perfect Dark exists though and is still better than anything released today.
Unfortunately in this medium great games are lost like tears in the rain etc.
