Simple explanation: Duke, while the mechanics of the game do account for 3 dimensions (i.e. height is a "real thing" in the engine, so the mechanics are three-dimensional), does not have a true 3D RENDERER for the vanilla game, so the scene is never shown on screen as a arrangement of completely solid 3D shapes. In particular, columns are always drawn straight up and down, so as you look up and down, your view doesn't "tilt" like you would realistically expect, it "shears," causing various distortions that look icky to many people such as OP.

I don't know if you just happen to dig up the same picture I did, but I posted that pic once talking about how Tomb Raider 3 has considerable muddier, more homogenous-looking textures with the levels relying too much on colored lighting.

I think it makes the early game especially look worse that TR2. Things just blend together too much, even though there is a higher polygon and probably resolution on the textures overall.

The point is, I don't find it hard to go back to old 3D games if they have a decent style. Sure, TR1 and 2 are blocky, but 1) I realized that at the time, it's not a surprise when I go back, and 2) they have an ordered, clean look that makes them easy on my eyes.

Some older games can be rough for framerate reasons which I am more sensitive to these days, but PC versions or emulation tends to help a lot. You can usually at least get a solid 30fps even when it's an old game being cranky.

>original is goofy and bad, but has a cheesy charm to it, like someone tried to make the best picture they could and were just kinda a dork about it

>remake looks like lazy budget shit, also a flatter composition with less color

How do they get this stuff wrong EVERY time they do a remake?

Not the biggest Quake fan, but I played the Honey-themed jam pack and it turns out I can enjoy Quake maps for the architecture alone. I play on Normal, though. Because I'm a weenie.
