I first heard it outside of doom when watching Rugrats, in an episode where they all take on a superhero persona (mocking the Fantastic Four). Robot Angelica makes the noises when she is defeated.

things like the sky texture used in the first episode made every outdoors section distinguished. it was like a really foggy morning but you were surrounded by towering hills. something like that wouldn't be put into a modern Doom game unless the creators were ready to take the brunt of criticism about how phobos apparently has an atmosphere now.
