Yowza prices really do go up. I got Beyond and Legend together for $30 Canadian about 10 years ago. Bought Rayearth new but it was worth it.

Congrats on getting 2 great games regardless the price. Both have been favorites of mine ever since getting them.

>Then you just pull out the best weapon you have (and by that point you're drowning in them)

You will get stuff a lot more than you're really required to use it. I played like that at first, but now I use everything when I find it, it's a lot more fun.

The sequel has a different weapon system, so you might like it more. And the puzzles in dungeon get more involved, though it's still not trying to be Zelda really.

I love it. Aside from Guardian Heroes it's my favorite Saturn game, and I like a lot of Saturn games. I also love Beyond Oasis though, so take that into account.

Magical Knight Rayearth has a typically bad Working Designs translation but is quite good otherwise and you switch between 3 characters with different abilities which is fun.

Legend of Oasis is more action focused, but is I think better than most actual Zelda games and a hell of a lot of fun to play.

Shining Wisdom is very meh.

For me it's a toss up between Guardian Heroes and Legend of Oasis.

Guardian Heroes is one of those games I've played through so many times with friends I can't even count anymore. It's an amazing party game with lots of fast paced fun. Like most brawlers it's not nearly as fun on it's own though.

For single player it's Legend of Oasis definitely. One of the best action RPG games ever made in my opinion, great combat and boss fights, neat puzzles, tons of exploring and its gorgeous.

>"Weeaboo games" are niche now and were even more niche back then.

Almost all the retro games people talk about on this board or care about in general were Japanese though. Even more when talking about consoles.

Top quality Japanese games were what just about everyone into console gaming then was interested in.

The way to win would have been to ignore the 3D push Sony was giving and focus on 2D games which were it's strong suit. If they actually marketed some of the amazing ones like Legend of Oasis the system could have got a lot more traction.

They're as fun as they are awesome looking too. You get these various elemental spirits and use them to help you fight and solve puzzles.

I dream of that game getting an HD release some day, even though I know it'll never happen because they would have to re-scan most of the art.

Probably because most of the body is carefully animated while the head remains static except for a bit of eye movement. In context in the full game with everything moving though I still think it all looks incredible.

Also special mention for Legend of Oasis.

>. It's full of manchildren and kids

In my opinion is the complaining here that's worse than anything. It's like everyone is mad at everyone over something all the time.

>There's hardly anything new going on and as it was mentioned before
>I'm tired of the umpteenth Trigger VS Cross, Castlevania shitposting threads

This is why I think we need to find a way to bring more people in. This board is really quite small, and much as I would like to have real discussions about more obscure games, it's hard when there's almost no one else around who's actually played them.

I really, really like Legend of Oasis. I would recommend playing Beyond and then if you like it seek out Legend. It's basically a bigger, better version of it. Cool puzzles, really interesting world to explore and it's one of the most gorgeous games ever in my opinion.

>It's clunky, it's annoying, it means you can't ever have any sort of combos or successive attacks, and it means the action is constantly interrupted throughout the entire game.

The only part of this I agree with is that you can't combo and I don't see that as a bad thing at all. I like that you have to carefully pick when and where you attack in SoM instead of slashing constantly. You clearly have a different preference which is perfectly fine. All I'm saying is that I really, really like the way Secret of Mana does combat.

And yes, despite your little dig I've played pretty much every retro ARPG there is. The only ones of that era I prefer to SoM are Beyond Oasis and Legend of Oasis, and only the second one I would say has smoother better combat.

And again, not saying you have to agree with me. But just saying, not everyone sees SoM's charging system as a flaw and the game is pretty popular for a reason. Not everyone enjoys the exact same things out of games. I take a solid strategic charge system like Secret's to combos any day.

If you don't mind the way PS1 looks on your TV then Saturn won't bother you either. I couldn't stand it without an upscaler personally, but you're not me.

Saturn isn't region free but apparently quite easy to mod to play imports. I'm sure someone will post links soon. That's the better way to go anyways since the consoles are fairly cheap, but you'll be paying an arm and a leg for any game that's not shit.

Gongrats, you're in for a treat. Saturn has a ton of awesome games. What genres do you enjoy? We can point you towards some stuff.

Saturn is really hard to emulate for because it's so weirdly designed. Emulators for it still aren't 100% so it's really not that bad a recommendation. Saturn is the only retro console I still keep around because of this. I've never found an emulator that can run Legend of Oasis to my satisfaction.

I accept that in the amount of time I have left on this planet I will never beat every game. I will never even beat every game that I'd like to.

Once I've accepted that, there's no pressure. When I feel like playing something, I take a moment to consider what mood I'm in and what sort of game would be best then I boot that up and play it until I'm satisfied.

If it's a game I really, really liked then I'll probably keep booting it up until I've finished it. If it gets boring near the end and I don't though, then who cares?

Turn based games are good when there are actually interesting choices to make in combat. But most RPGs, especially retro ones are just attack-attack-attack-attack on random enemies and nuke magic and heal on bosses.

I prefer having to manually position my character and choose when you attack. Also if you've played Secret of Mana for even just 10 minutes you would realize that mashing is never, ever a good combat strategy in that game.

>>2590386
Legend of Oasis would like to have a word with you. Great controls, interesting puzzles and fun areas to explore.

Legend of Oasis is my favorite action RPG of all time. Gorgeous, great controls, cool puzzles, it's wonderful. Magical Knight Rayearth is a really solid one as well. Saturn had a tiny, yet fantastic library of games. It's the only reto system I have a back up of in case the one I use ever craps out on me. That's how great it is.

Is there any news on what M2 will be working on after Gunstar Heroes? Ecco 2 would totally rock. I'd also like to see Vectorman 1/2 and Beyond Oasis would look amazing. My dream is that at some point they try doing Saturn games. Legend of Oasis would look mind blowing.

If you liked Alundra, then I recommend Legend of Oasis more strongly. It's different but in the same vein. It's also one of the most beautiful games ever in my opinion.

Beyond Oasis (Genesis) and it's sequel Legend of Oasis on Saturn are straight up two of the best action RPGs ever. Think of a mix between Secret of Mana with it's various elemental spirits and Zelda style puzzles. So you go through dungeons and the like, fighting monsters and using your various spirits to light torches, melt blocks of ice in your way etc etc.

They're both really, really great games. Legend of Oasis especially is I think one of the best looking games ever. I love the style and the art so much.
