A lot of good points have been made in the thread, but I'll go with the smaller roster and lack of stacked characters. Kirby and Pikachu are objectively the strongest characters by a large margin, but unless the skill gap among the players is large it doesn't result in constant stomps. Ultimate just has too many poorly designed characters and the resulting power creep is ridiculous. Too many characters with stagewide recovery, high damage counters, reflects, quick hits with massive spike/damage etc.

I used to play Smash 64 everyday with friends when I was a drug dealer and even though we all started at different skill levels, we all ended up getting pretty damn good with every character. The matches were always entertaining, dynamic and there was virtually no salt involved. Playing Ultimate with friends is a terrible experience in comparison. Like I said above the discrepancy between movesets in the game is massive because of the sheer amount of them, and a lot of my friends and people online stick to S tiers because its easier. This results in frustrating and salty matches for both players because unless you're an adderall snorting god at the game, the only winning choice to a lot of these mechanics is infuriating for both players. I have multiple friends who only play characters with strong counters like Joker and Lucina, and after half an hour of being forced to grabspam every game we both end up pissed off and don't want to play anymore. Random character games are fun, but most people just want to play their 2 safe picks all night and its boring as all hell.
