>How do I get into shmups?

What is your purpose for wanting to get into them in the first place? Everything stems from there.

As someone who owned and used a Nomad for many years, it's a piece of shit. It's bulky and uncomfortable to use, you basically have to use it plugged in becauseit eats batteries like candy and the screen is both tiny and sucks.

It depends on what exactly your question is. If it's how much money I spent on games from the 80's to mid 00's where pur retro cut off that's one thing. If you count games bought second hand or whatever for consoles that were no longer current at the time that's another thing. If you count buying compilations and other retro re-releases that's another thing. Or do you want it all together... ?

I like small screens way more for retro games, I think it makes them look awesome. Getting a Nomad almost felt like a whole different system.

But I do! Or rather I did till I gifted it to a friend who actually collects old stuff still and I haven't used it over a PSP for ages.

Gaiares is one of my favorite Genesis games. In most ways it's a typical shmup of the day but it's gimmick is that instead of upgrading weapons through random powerups, you suck the abilities out of various enemies to change your attack and certain ones are more useful in some sections than others so it's a game of what to go for when. Then on top of that, the music is awesome and the stages are tons of fun. One pretty much feels like they wanted to make a Castlevania shmup for a level where you dodge giant axes abd spears and shit coming at you and then fight robo-Death. It's a good time.

I did that a few years back as a combination of wanting space and extra pocket money and never regretted it for a moment.

For me it was Genesis. In the 16 bit era I preferred Genesis already for some reason and already had more games for it than SNES. But in 1999 or so I found a Nomad in a pawn shop and then started buying up just about every random Genesis cart I came across. Back then an expensive one was like $15 and most were like $5 and I had a cushy security job that basically let me play games all night. I got into games I never otherwise would have like scrolling shooters and really enjoyed some of them. It was good times.

Convenience and getting to play old console games on a handheld system (that's portable) are my big reasons. Also I hate CRTs and my collection of games was worth a pretty penny when I sold them.

The Nomad was pretty cool in the pre-PSP days. I love most handhelds though.

I don't like shmups much so I don't spend my time trying to beat them usually. I enjoyed Gaiares a lot bit haven't played it in close to a decade. Fantasy Zone is pretty rad and I played that recently and spent last month playing Granada on Genesis which is shmup-like. The important point is that whining about people who aren't you having different tastes in games is a pointless waste. I like bumping into other roguelike fans, but I understand why the genre is offputting to many and it's no skin off my back that it'll never be as popular as RPGs, platformers or whatever. I just play what I like.
