I find his personal politics (which he seems to hamfist into things) simple minded and vacuous but he at least knows his way around FPS games.

I was glad too that he mentioned Painkiller, I remember playing it in 2006 and wishing it had gotten more love and now I think it has. He knows what can make games good but you can tell when he does not really give a shit about the game he is playing so for somethings he just does not care and that goes through to the review but then his fanboys defend him as infallible.

That said, I have purchased 2 games in the past based on his praise.

Yes and no.
It does everything to market itself like that without being direct about it. Otherwise it would be instantly compared to ARMA II and eaten alive.

Battlefield while still arcadey is still closer to realism but the thing about ARMA is is has all the real life boredom of standing around for extended periods like a real warzone has.

and then getting shot by some sniper 900m away because you were looking at another screen out in the open
