>I like the original Resident Evil for its difficulty.

Yes. One thing to know about is that difficulty may vary depending not only on region but also on version. In some versions zombies take more hits and deal more dmg as well than in others, but there is no proper documentation as to how each version is since it's quite a mess.

For instance I think that the PC version uses the easier Jap difficulty in all versions; unlike the original Saturn/PS1 releases which are harder.

>That said, an overlooked feature of the original Resident Evil is how dynamic the story is. It's just little things and mainly only in Jill's game, but you can meet Barry in lots of different places, getting different dialogue or skipping bosses. REmake kept this, but only partially.

Yes, it's a very overlooked feature which was also rather influential. It seems plenty of games were inspired by it or even used a very similar system, even non survival horror games.

It doesn't play faster on all computers, it's pretty random desu. On my old one it ran too fast, but not on this newer one.

Always, I played the PC version a LOT. (I played port version a lot) and I never realized you could skip dialogue-cutscenes. I knew you could skip doors and FMVs, but I thought the DS port was the first to introduce skipping dialogues, that's a plus for the PC version.

THIS is true survival horror. The game is designed so that if you're out of supplies, you can use other means. RE3 was like that too, though it wasn't as good as 1 in that regard, it was still there. In RE2, there is nothing like that, and there are tons of bossfights, as a consequence the games hands out tons much more ammo in plain sight....

RE:CV just fucked up. If you're unlucky you have to start the entire game over. WORSE even, if you try to be start, that is to say if before switching back to Claire you store your supplies in the safe for her, the game punishes you for it by switching back to Chris with no mean to access the safe again before a bossfight which has no supplies in the room.

It's good in classic mode because it offers a different experience:
- all 3D models were redone from scratch and look more detailed
- zombies have a different AI and are harder to dodge
- to compensate for that player has 2 new moves: 180° turn and RE4 knife use

On top of that, it's the only version if which you play skip cutscenes and doors. That and the new controls make it fast and fun, not quite like RE3, but close.

Also if you have friends willing to play RE with you I assume the multiplayer modes could be cool. I don't know because none of my friends cared for RE.

Finally in terms of modding, if you're playing emulated or on a flashcart, it is very easy to swap character models around and play as any character both from Alpha and Bravo teams (since they're all available in the multiplayer mode). Personally I enjoyed going through the game as Rebecca.
The closest any other version has to that is Barry's mod for PC.

In short:
- 2 game modes, classic and DS. classic is pretty much the original game. DS is a new way to go through the mansion, like Director's Cut, with new item and enemy placement, etc. All the puzzles where replaced by touchscreen stuff, and sometimes when you enter a room you're FORCED to fight a first person knife combat.
Honestly, the new puzzles are shit. They're like the kind of eductional toys you give to toddlers, like "put the square shaped thing into the squared shaped hole", baby stuff. It sucks.
The first person knife mode also suck, in several aspects. Not only they are by definition "anti survival horror", but even gameplay it's terrible and I figured out you could just keep spamming diagonal knife cuts to win it all, and fast.

Now, the good stuff:
- all 3D models, enemies and characters, were redone from scratch and look really good.
- New moves: 180° degree turn, RE4 style knife use which does not take place in the inventory.
- Reworked zombie AI, they're harder to dodge.

These 3 points also work in "classic" mode, which makes the game very different with the original, but it's good stuff. Just not something i'd recommend to someone who wants to discover RE1 like it was back then.

Also, you can skip doors AND cutscenes. Only version of RE1 in which you can skip cutscenes. Makes it super fast.

Also there are 2 co-op mini games using the link cable. Never tried them myself. All I know is your coop partner appears appears as a star on your screen, not his 3D model...
In these modes you can play as ANY character from both Alpha and Beta teams.

If you're playing on emulation or using a flashcart, you can easily swap models around and therefore play the game as any character from both Alpha and Beta teams. On PC you can do that too (pic related), and use gameshark codes on console for the same result, but here it's easier and it's not just limited to Rebecca/Barry, you can play as anyone using this trick; and it's easier to do.

On top of that, as far as the PAL console versions are concerned, there MAY be timing differences. IF the devs of one of the port went through some extra trouble to make their PAL version run at the intended speed, some actions could still end up behaving differently because not everything can be perfectly converted.
For instance in the PAL Saturn version of Exhumed, player and enemies movement speed are the same as in the NTSC version, but player weapons have a slower firing rate, and some enemies shot are on the contrary faster. This sort of thing can happen, but here I'm just talking out of my ass since I don't remember if any PAL console version plays at the regular speed. IIRC the PAL Director's Cut runs slow, but the Saturn version may be better, but again I'm not sure.

and yeah, while we're still talking about versions and also their mods, while PS1 has Ultimate Director's Cut, PC has Barry's mod. Only changes are the models and the dialogues, but it's tons of fun anyway.
There was a Rebecca mod for PC planned as well, with item and enemy placement changes, but I don't know what's the status on that.

Good thing about the DS version if you're running a rom on emulator or flashcart, is that you can swap models around; and thanks to the new mini game having all playable characters, that means you can play as anyone from both Alpha and Bravo teams.

>Post game tidbits you think you are the only one to have found

In Resident Evil, the statues you have to push down in the mezzaine 1st floor west side, you can safely knife zombies through the statues. Also works in REmake.

Also in the courtyard, dogs can't hit you if you stand on the elevators. If you stand at the right spot and with a good timing you can knife the dogs as they are jumping to bite you but are stopped by an invisible wall just in front of the elevator.

Then, when you come back to the mansion and there are Hunters everywhere, there are 2 big spiders in the corridor East, groundfloor (the one where dogs jump through the window at the start of the game). If you stand in between furnitures, you can knife them without them being able to hit you.

Finally, in the PC version of the game and only in that version, there is a hidden Beretta clip in the back of the room (in a dark spot near the door). You can't actually see it but if you press the action key you will pick it up. Probably a present from the PC port devs to hint at how the Tyrant can actually be killed in less than 15 Beretta bullets.

What's this? A RE2 mod I guess?

RE2 on PC got some pretty fun mods, like Requiem of Spies.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1K0Qkd13Zw

RE1 has a mod that lets you play as Barry which is a lot of fun too. Sadly, unlike Requiem of Spies which changes enemy and item placement, Barry's mod only changes character models, the weapon you start with, and dialogues; but at least the dialogues are hilarious
