The serial port (for now) is pretty slow to use in Dreamshell, but if you want something faster, you can always do the IDE mod and install an IDE hard drive, or if you REALLY want to go all out, SATA is possible believe it or not, though tbh I have no idea how. I just know that it's an extra step in addition to the IDE mod.

I also have a softmodded PS2 and also a Wii.
The Dreamcast's Serial port is painfully slow in comparison to the PS2's IDE port or the Wii's USB 2.0, but it does get the job done just fine.

Also, as mentioned by other anons, Dreamshell is getting better and better at using the Serial port, but if you have your heart set on GDEMU, here's a comparison video you might want to check out comparing GDEMU to Dreamshelll via IDE.

Also, don't forget, part of the reason that loading screens of any kind are so slow is because the Dreamcast CPU is slow as shit.
200mhz is literally half the speed of the Gamecube

Lol, that kinda is a bit more than you should have (Got mine for $10)

Still though, good purchase. It's a neat little console. Just make sure you get Dreamshell running asap.

Also, if you get a chance, definitely look into getting a VGA cable.
