If I had to choose I'd pick S&K, but S3 still has Angel Island, Hydrocity, and Ice Cap so I can't imagine playing them separately.

All of the classic sonic games have branching paths, so by replaying them you're "rewarded" with a new part of the level. Sonic 3&K especially.

Then there are the special stages in 2 and 3. You're not expected to beat all of them on your first try. And when you do beat them, you get a game-breaking super power. Which is fine because you've already mastered the game at that point.

I tried playing Sonic 2 and 3 with my nephew.

If he plays as Tails, he whines and complains every time he's not on screen. I have to tip-toe through the level so he can keep up and keep him quiet.

If he plays as Sonic, he gets stuck on every slope. I keep telling him how to spin, but he somehow forgets 2 minutes later. It's painful to watch him play but he is getting better.
